In order to help the mentally ill and improve conditions that promote mental health issues reform is needed. We advocate for policy and structural changes. If implemented those with mental health issues would greatly benefit.

In order to determine the best treatment for mentally-ill youth offenders, screening and assessment must be done at all levels of the juvenile justice system. This ensures that any mental health needs and concerns are efficiently identified, thus allowing for proper course of action.

Community-based alternatives to incarceration are cheaper and have proven to be more successful than mass incarceration. While incarceration removes the child from criminogenic risk factors, community-based rehabilitation programs target and provide help to overcome these risk factors.
